Counselling is one of the biggest acts of self-care, read below for how to get the most out of your counselling session, and continue to look after yourself following.
I want to start by saying kudos to you for looking after yourself and seeking counselling support, this is a hugely important part of self-care and personal growth. Take a moment to acknowledge your worthiness, and offer genuine appreciation to yourself for investing in your healing.
After your therapy session it is important to keep this self-care going, and to create space to process and integrate new insights. If you can, don’t rush back into your day. Take time to check-in with yourself, practice some stillness and self-care, and reflect on the session.
Firstly check-in with yourself, notice how you are feeling physically and emotionally, ask yourself “what do I need right now” and honor what comes up. This may be the need for rest, or to do something you enjoy. It is normal to often feel emotionally drained or exhausted after a session.
Next stillness and selfcare. I invite you to take some time after the session to do an activity that you find calming and grounding, such as taking a walk in nature, sitting by the ocean, taking a hot bath or shower. If you are shorter on time, even sitting in stillness for 5 minutes and doing some slow breathing can help you begin to integrate and be ready to continue with your day.
Finally reflecting on the session, journaling can be a helpful tool, writing down thoughts, feelings and insights. You can also write down any topics you want to bring up at the next session. If it feels right for you, you may want to connect with a trusted friend or loved one to share what came up for you in the session.
Avoid substances for 24 hours after the session, eat a nutritious meal, drink plenty of water, and get a good night’s sleep.
You matter, look after yourself.
